EOE: Understanding the Condition and Its Impact

This recorded discussion features Andrew Abreo, M.D., and Colleen LeBlanc, M.D.,  pediatric gastroenterologists at Children’s Hospital New Orleans and faculty at LSU Health Sciences Center, who specialize in eosinophilic gastrointestinal disorders (EGIDs), including eosinophilic esophagitis (EOE).

Together, they explain what EOE is, how it differs from and overlaps with IgE-mediated food allergies, and the unique challenges for children living with both conditions.

Objectives

  1. Define eosinophilic esophagitis (EOE) and identify its primary symptoms, causes, and relationship to food allergies as relevant to counseling clients.

  2. Explain the differences and overlaps between EOE and IgE-mediated food allergies, and how these distinctions impact the psychosocial needs of clients and their families.

  3. Develop strategies to support children with EOE in both clinical and school environments, incorporating collaboration with healthcare providers and educational staff to address emotional well-being and daily functioning.
