Alpha-Gal Syndrome: A Hidden Allergy's Awareness, Challenges, and Hope

Debbie Nichols and Candice Matthis are individuals living with alpha-gal syndrome (AGS) who advocate nationally on behalf of the AGS community. They co-founded Two Alpha Gals, an advocacy platform and resource community dedicated to supporting people living with AGS. They also founded The Alpha-gal Foundation, an organization committed to providing people-centered support to the AGS community by engaging, educating, and empowering those affected by the condition

Objectives

  1. Describe the physiological basis, triggers, and symptom variability of Alpha-Gal Syndrome to build a foundational understanding for client education and counseling.
  2. Identify and assess the psychosocial challenges AGS clients face, including anxiety from delayed reactions, fear of re-exposure, social limitations, and the impact of misinformation on coping and mental health.
  3. Integrate targeted mental health strategies, prevention education, and resource referrals (e.g., food allergy counselor directories, lifestyle guidance) into counseling practice to improve client resilience, safety, and quality of life.
